3.5 m³ Hydraulic Rotating Excavator Clamshell Grab Delivered to Malaysia

A contractor based in Malaysia has taken delivery of a 3.5 m³ hydraulic rotating excavator clamshell grab built with 360-degree continuous rotation and a heavy-duty Q345B high-strength steel body. The grab was ordered as a direct replacement for a fixed, non-rotating bucket attachment that was slowing down the client's bulk handling operations. This case covers the requirement, the engineering choices behind the unit, and how the attachment now performs on site.

Client Background

The customer is a Malaysian earthworks and bulk materials contractor working on civil infrastructure and yard-handling projects. Their fleet includes hydraulic excavators of the 20–30 tonne class, and their daily work involves moving loose materials — sand, crushed aggregate, excavated spoil, and mixed construction debris — between stockpiles, haul trucks, and hoppers. As volumes grew, the limit of their existing attachment became obvious: a rigid bucket cannot pick cleanly without dragging material, and cannot orient a load once lifted.

The Handling Problem
  • Material spillage: loose sand and aggregate were being lost during every lift and swing, wasting product and creating extra clean-up labour.
  • Precision placement: feeding a hopper or a truck bed at an angle required repeated repositioning of the whole excavator, burning fuel and cycle time.
  • Uneven digging edges: a standard bucket could not cut a clean vertical face in a stockpile, so the pile profile degraded over time.
  • Wear and deformation: the previous attachment showed shell deformation and edge wear far earlier than expected under continuous aggregate duty.
Why a Rotating Clamshell Grab

A clamshell grab solves these problems by gripping rather than scooping. Two hydraulically driven shells close on the material, so the load is enclosed and cannot spill during the swing. Adding 360-degree rotation means the operator can position the jaws at any angle without moving the machine — critically important when working in a confined yard, alongside a hopper, or over the side of a truck.

The 3.5 m³ capacity was selected to match the client's excavator class: large enough to substantially raise tonnes per cycle, but still within a weight and reach envelope that keeps the machine stable at full extension.

Engineering & Construction Details
  1. Q345B high-strength steel structure: the shell and body are fabricated from Q345B plate, a low-alloy high-strength structural steel with good weldability and toughness. It delivers a high strength-to-weight ratio, letting the grab carry a large rated volume without an excessive dead weight penalty on the excavator.
  2. Reinforced jaw edges: the cutting lips are built up and hardened to resist abrasion from sand, gravel, and debris, extending service life between repairs.
  3. Hydraulic rotation drive: a dedicated rotation motor and slewing mechanism provide smooth 360-degree positioning, with the hydraulic circuit protected against overload and shock pressure.
  4. Sealed slewing bearing: the rotation joint is sealed and greased for dusty, humid, tropical conditions.
  5. Balanced geometry: jaw shape and centre of gravity were matched to the material types the client handles, so the grab closes fully instead of leaving a residue of material in the shell.
Testing & Delivery

Before packing, the unit was assembled and run through a functional test cycle: full open and close strokes, continuous rotation both directions, hydraulic pressure and leak checks, and inspection of all weld seams and pin bores. It was then coated for marine export, container-packed, and shipped with hydraulic hoses, documentation, and a spare parts list so the client's workshop could handle routine maintenance locally.

On-Site Results
  • Cleaner lifts: enclosed jaws stop material loss during swing, keeping more of the product in the truck or hopper.
  • Faster cycles: rotation removes the need to reposition the excavator for each placement, shortening the load-haul-return loop.
  • Better stockpile control: the grab cuts a defined face and releases material precisely, so piles stay tidy and yard space is used more efficiently.
  • Lower wear cost: the Q345B body and hardened edges are holding shape under continuous aggregate duty, reducing repair downtime compared with the previous attachment.
  • One attachment, more jobs: the same grab now handles sand, aggregate, spoil, and debris, reducing the number of attachments the client needs to swap and transport.
Conclusion

For contractors handling loose bulk materials, the real choice is between scooping and gripping. This Malaysia delivery shows the difference: a hydraulic rotating excavator clamshell grab with 360-degree rotation and a Q345B steel body gave the client cleaner loads, shorter cycles, and lower maintenance on the excavator they already owned. Matching capacity to machine tonnage and duty cycle remains the key decision — and it is where every enquiry starts.
